Typical diet for the travelling Celiac

I spent yesterday meandering back to London from Manchester, via Blenheim Palace (http://www.blenheimpalace.com/). Blenheim Palace is well worth a visit and we had a gorgeous day for walking in the gardens and park, having lunch by the fountains in the formal gardens. The café at Blenheim Palace had a good choice of mains for lunch and some gluten free flapjacks and coconut macaroons for afternoon tea. Pretty high in calories and fat but a much better day diet wise (though I was guessing for a lot of the portion sizes), and a good example of how to make a gluten free diet work when travelling in the UK. Though I am heartily tired of potatoes and am really looking forward to some variety in my carbohydrates!

Oddly enough, if you are travelling in the UK breakfast is often the easiest to get gluten free as most hotels offer a full English fry up. Many chain hotels are very aware of the needs of Celiacs and will have gluten free bread if you ask. Case in point: The Holiday Inn in Brighouse we stayed in last weekend. When we came down for breakfast they had the typical full English buffet going. As usual, I asked the waitress to check if the beans and hash browns were gluten free. She checked with the chef and not only were both fine but I was also offered gluten free bread and gluten free Cumberland sausages. And those sausages were absolutely amazing! I swear they were simply much higher quality pure pork sausages with a few herbs and spices, as opposed to the regular ones on the buffet which had wheat rusk as filler.  Moral of the story: Always ask!
